Description

The subject of Composition and Design is broad and there are a variety of compositional tools that have been used over time to emphasize ideas, stories, and religious thought.

In this course we will focus primarily on two areas: Notan, which deals with light and dark and the visual structure, and the very flexible tool of Rebatement, which works with the underlying architectural structure.

Using images from master artists, as well as some of my work, we will analyze why a painting works and what tools were used to create vivid images.

Finally, you will learn how to use both Notan and Rebatement to create strong visual images that will read across a room.

In addition, I will teach you how to make your own viewfinders that you can use in your studio and in the field.

This class is useful for any visual artist as well as for any lover of the arts.

Who this course is for:

  • Painters, whether it be traditional or abstract, Photographer, Graphic Artists, Quilters, or anyone who wants to make the most powerful compositions of their work.

Notan: Light/Dark Preview 01:20

It is thought that when babies are first born they see only in black and white.  From this theory it seems that from the outset we are being taught, or perhaps it's programmed in our brain, to see things in 2 values: Light and Dark. (A value is how light or dark something is.)

It's the Light/Dark relationship that very quickly tells a story, including the abstract story. In this section we will learn what Notan means and what it visually looks like. Later, we will learn how to use Notan to help with the overall design your work.

Sidebar...Abstract - What this actually means Preview 01:35

I will be using the word, 'abstract' a lot. I will be talking about abstract shapes and how it relates to design. In this lecture we will try to get a better understanding of what it means when we talk about abstracts, so when we get further along to talk about abstract shapes you will know what it means!
