How to get Found in Etsy's Search Preview 03:13

How to Get Found in Search

Getting found in search may seem daunting, but all it takes is a little know-how.

What I hear most from Etsy sellers as they grow their businesses is that they struggle to get found in search by shoppers online. Thankfully, it's a problem you can solve with a little know-how and time to experiment with using the right copy. The tips below will help you work on your shop to make it easier for shoppers to find you right at that moment they are ready to buy.

As you work on your listings, be sure to think like a shopper each step of the way — what will grab them and communicate everything they need to make that purchase.

Step 1: Brainstorm Keywords and Phrases

Each listing should start with a list of keywords and phrases that you think your target buyer will search when shopping. Use this brainstorming list to get the ball rolling and be sure your titles, tags and description answer all of those questions.

Pro Tip: Search Suggestions Did you know that Etsy's search bar can give you a leg up on tracking what customers are searching? Start typing what you sell in the search bar. The words that appear are popular customer search terms. This will give you the exact keywords and phrases shoppers are searching, so be sure to use ones that are relevant to your product in your titles, tags and description. Think of synonyms and try those in the search field as well!

Descriptions: Look in your listing's description — often, there are good ideas in there that you are organically using when describing your item that make great keywords! Test some of these descriptive words in your titles and tags.

Step 2: Apply Search Terms to Your Listings

Now that you have a list of keywords and phrases you want to try, work them into your item listings.

Create powerful titles. While keeping your titles enticing and buyer-friendly, add more meaningful terms that buyers are likely to search. Keep the most important search terms at the beginning of the listing to maximize their importance in search.

Pro Tip: Including your main category in the title (handmade, supplies, vintage) doesn't necessarily increase your relevancy in Etsy Search for those terms. It does, however, communicate to a shopper without a doubt what the item is. Experiment for yourself to see what words in your title help your conversion rate of browsers into buyers.

Maximize your tags. Plug in your list of keywords and phrases and use all available spaces. Each one is another opportunity to find your shopper!

Diversity matters. Don't name all of your similar items the same (or nearly the same) thing! This targets just one type of shopper, you want to keep a bit of diversity in your keywords to try and target a variety of buyers and bring them to you shop through different search results.

Put your most important terms in both your titles and tags.

Important terms to the front: If your titles are long (more than one line in “List” mode), put very important search terms so they fall in the first line.

Step 3: Categorize Accurately

Review your Categories: When shoppers use search filters, they will will find your items based on the way you've categorized them. Think of where shoppers will look for your item when you categorize. Refine your categorization on individual listings, or using bulk category edit in your Listings Manager. Read more here.

Step 4: Make Sure It's Working

Shop Stats: Keep an eye on your stats to see your hard work in action. Shop stats lists what keywords people are using to find you in search. How can you use this information to improve your titles, tags and description?

  • Use any listed words that you are not already using.
  • Include synonyms for your most popular keywords.

If you are getting lots of hits but no sales, maybe you are optimizing for the wrong keywords to find a shopper ready to buy — try testing out new phrases, and being very specific with style. Experiment to see what works!

Make measured changes: If your search terms are already bringing people into your shop, go slowly with making major changes so you can see what's working before doing more.

Step 5: Bring It Together

Get help: If you need help with coming up with search terms or improving your search ranking, try joining one of these teams about relevancy or SEO.

Brainstorming Keywords Preview 01:54

Brainstorming Keywords for Tags and Titles

Ask yourself these questions to uncover the titles and tags that will help shoppers find your products.

Labeling your listing with great keywords is the best way to get buyers to your item from search — both on Etsy, and from search engines like Google.

I created this list by analyzing our top search terms and categorizing the types of words and phrases buyers are searching for, so these can make great search terms! Also, make sure to read our step-by-step article about How to Get Found in Search.

Ok, let's begin! Ask yourself these questions about your item:

1. What is it?

Eg. necklace, jewelry, bowl, print

2. What is it specifically? What type?

Eg. hoop earrings, v-neck sweaters, long sleeved shirt, cocktail ring

3. Who is it for?

Eg. women, men, baby girl, children, girl, adult, pets, dog, teachers

4. What is the main material?

Add the major material to your tags, if it is something you think a buyer might search for to find your item. Add minor materials or component materials to the “materials” box. Eg. leather, organic cotton, canvas, felt, metal, 14K gold, sterling silver, glass

5. What is the main color?

Buyers are not likely to look for minor colors in your piece, so stick to the main color(s) or important color combos! Eg. ivory, red, carnation pink, navy blue, neutral, rainbow, black and white

6. What method or technique did you use to make it?

Eg. hammered (for metal jewelry), burned (for woodworking), handspun yarn, appliqued, embroidered

7. Where will the item be used?

Eg. kitchen, hair, office, beach, garden, car, nursery

8. What size is it?

Eg. plus size, 1X, medium, XS, oversized, extra long, chunky, 7mm, 18in, 8 x 10 (art), 7.5 (shoes)

9. What style is it?

Eg. goth, victorian, hippie, punk, tribal, impressionist, post-modern, feminine, sophisticated, southwestern, Japanese

10. What imagery or motifs are on the item?

Eg. owl, landscape, nature, plaid, geometric, floral, animal

11. Are there synonyms?

Eg. Infant for young babies, handbag for purses and clutches, kids for children, drink for tea, trousers for pants, travel mirror for compact mirror.

12. What is the scent or flavor?

Eg. chocolate, fruit, sweet, spicy (for bath and beauty and food items).

13. What era is it from?

Eg. 1940s, mod, Victorian (for vintage items)

14. What occasion is it for?

Eg. Christmas stocking, Valentine's Day card, baby shower invitation

15. What is your Shop Name?

Consider labeling a few items with the name of your shop to make sure it appears if someone searches for you without first selecting “Shops” from the drop-down menu. A few listings will do, since buyers can access your shop from one of your items.

Information Uses, Sharing & Disclosure

We respect your privacy. Etsy will not disclose your name, email address or other personal information to third parties without your consent, except as specified in this policy. We generally use the information to provide and improve our services and products, for billing and payments, for identification and authentication, for targeted online and offline marketing, to contact members or interested parties, and for general research and aggregate reporting.

Etsy limits access to your personal information by Etsy personnel to those whom we believe reasonably need that information to provide products or services to you or in order to do their jobs.

If you reside outside of North America or South America, your information is controlled by Etsy Ireland. Etsy Ireland may share some of the data it gathers with Etsy, Inc. (its U.S. parent company) or other Etsy affiliates for purposes described in this Privacy Policy, including for ID verification, transaction reviews and payment processing. Regardless of what country you reside in or supply information from, you authorize Etsy to use your information in the United States, Ireland and any other country where Etsy operates. Please be aware that the privacy laws and standards in certain jurisdictions may differ from those applying in the country in which you reside.

As part of the buying and selling process, Etsy will facilitate the sharing of information between the two members involved in the transaction, such as the other Etsy member's email address, shipping address, and payment information. By making a purchase on Etsy you are directing us to share your information in this way. We expect you to respect the privacy of the member whose information you received. As described in Etsy's Terms of Use, you have a limited license to use that information only for Etsy-related communications or for Etsy-facilitated transactions. Etsy has not granted you a license to use the information for unsolicited commercial messages or unauthorized transactions. Without express consent from that person, you must not add any Etsy member to your email or physical mailing list or misuse any member's personal information. Remember that you need to comply with all relevant legal rules when you use Etsy. This includes applicable data protection and privacy laws which govern the ways in which you can use another Etsy member's information.

Etsy may release your personal information to a third party in the following circumstances: to protect, establish, or exercise our legal rights or defend against legal claims; to comply with a subpoena, court order, legal process, or other legal requirement; or when we believe in good faith that such disclosure is necessary to comply with the law, prevent imminent physical harm or financial loss, or investigate, prevent, or take action regarding illegal activities, suspected fraud, threats to our property, or violations of Etsy's Terms of Use.

Please review our Requests for Information Policy to learn more about how Etsy responds to requests for records or information about members of Etsy's community. We also may disclose personally identifiable information to parties in connection with an investigation of fraud, intellectual property infringement, piracy, or other unlawful activity in accordance with our Intellectual Property Policy. In such events, Etsy may disclose a name, address, country, phone number, email address and company name.

Etsy is affiliated with a variety of businesses and works closely with them. These businesses may offer promotions (including email promotions) or sell items or services to you through Etsy's services. Etsy may also provide services or sell products jointly with affiliated businesses. Etsy may share demographic information with business partners, but it will always be aggregated and anonymized, so personally-identifiable information is not revealed.

Etsy may engage third party companies and individuals (such as payment processors, research companies, analytics and security providers) to help provide our services. These third parties have limited access to your information only to perform these tasks on our behalf and are obligated to Etsy not to disclose or use your information for other purposes.

In some cases, Etsy may choose to buy or sell assets. In these types of transactions (such as a sale, merger, liquidation, receivership or transfer of all or substantially all of Etsy's assets), member information is typically one of the business assets that is transferred. If Etsy intends to transfer information about you, Etsy will notify you by email or by putting a prominent notice on the Site and the App, and you will be afforded an opportunity to opt out before information about you becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

Third-party plug-ins also may collect information about your use of the Site. For example, when you a load a page on Etsy that has a social plug-in from a third-party site or service, such as a “Like” or “Send” button, you are also loading content from that third-party site. That site may request cookies directly from your browser. These interactions are subject to the privacy policy of the third-party site. In addition, certain cookies and other tracking mechanisms on our site are used by third parties for targeted online marketing and other purposes. These technologies allow a partner to recognize your computer or mobile device each time you visit Etsy, but do not allow access to personally identifiable information from Etsy. Etsy does not have access or control over these third-party technologies, and they are not covered by our Privacy Policy. For more information, see our Cookies & Tracking Technologies page. If you prefer to prevent third parties from setting and accessing cookies on your computer, you may set your browser to block cookies. You may also opt out of the use of cookies by Google Analytics here. Additionally, you may remove yourself from the interest-based advertising of companies participating in the Digital Advertising Alliance program by opting out here (or if located in the European Union click here). Although our website currently does not respond to “do not track” browser headers, you can limit tracking by taking these steps.

We can only speak for ourselves; this policy does not apply to the practices of third parties that Etsy does not own or control, or individuals that Etsy does not employ or manage. If you provide your information to others, different practices may apply to the use or disclosure of the information you provide to them. Etsy does not control the privacy policies of third parties, including other Etsy members. Etsy is not responsible for the privacy or security practices of Etsy members or other websites on the Internet, even those linked to or from the Etsy Site or Apps. We encourage you to ask questions before you disclose your personal information to others.
