Let the quick begin!

Leaders take responsibility Preview 12:31

Welcome to the 'Purpose' module.

This module will introduce you to the essence of leadership; taking responsibility, building a vision and generating a powerful sense of purpose in your people.

We start with this module because with responsibility, vision or purpose a leader has nothing to achieve. Responsibility empowers the leader to dream of a better vision for the community they are responsible for. Vision describes what that better future looks like. Purpose is the vibrant creative energy that leaders must learn to generate and focus in their people in order to mobilise them to transform today's reality into tomorrow's vision.

Leaders take responsibility

We always talk about taking responsibility but this lecture explains what responsibility actually means and why it is the first step and the basic platform for all successful leadership. You will learn:

-The difference between an internal and external locus of control
-How responsibility is used to build an effective team
-How 2 companies took very different approaches to responsibility to deal with a crisis

SELF-ASSESSMENT Develop your learning

This section is about self-assessment, there are no right answers. It is designed to develop your learning by challenging you to think about how you can use this principle to become a better 21st Century leader.

Responsibility is about taking control (through the external locus of control) and committing yourself and your team to ensuring certain outcomes. Remember, what you are responsible for is NOT the same as what your goal or vision is e.g. as a football manager you are responsible for creating a successful team you’re your goal could be to win the national championship.

Describe the following:

  1. Describe why you want to/are taking responsibility.
  2. List 3 actions you have taken (i.e. things you have actually done) that clearly demonstrate how you have taken responsibility for ensuring the success of the team.
  3. Describe your current sense of control in the situation you are in, do you need to take more control of the situation or do you need to learn to let go and give more responsibility to others?

Describe your state of mind right now! Draw a picture, write some key phrases, create an equation… do whatever it takes to capture your insights!

Welcome to Passionate People!

In this section you will discover why it is crucial to have passionate people to ensure success. You will learn about how to attract the right people to your team, organise them effectively and build a high-performing team.

It is important to recognise that 'passion' is not a magical, mysterious substance. As a leader, you create passion in people by instilling in them a powerful sense of purpose as was covered in Module 1. By creating a strong sense of resonsibility and an inspiring vision, you generate passion within people to succeed. The power of the vision generates the passion in your people.

However, passion is not enough. It must be focused and transformed into performance. They key challenge is to find a way to effectively channel the passionate creative energies of your people into achieving useful goals and building the vision. This module explains the first step to transforming passion into performance.

Write 3-5 action points that you can do right now to address the situation. *IMPORTANT* never engage such a situation with aggression. Have courage and address the situation rather than let it fester.

You can do this by talking to them in person or sending an email. If you can’t get in touch with them then try to imagine what they would say is the biggest challenge.

3. Describe three different solutions you can think of for the challenge your team faces, don’t just focus on your favourite. Give proper time and attention to all three different possibilities!

Discover the crucial skill that is sensemaking Preview 24:01

Welcome to the Plot section!

We are now entering the advanced concepts for leadership. Plot is crucial for ensuring clarity, unity and meaning in an organisation. Let us imagine you have done everything right so far and your organisation grows and becomes more successful. However, as a result of the growing complexity people become less clear about what is happening. They are less connected to each other and the organisation and 'silos' start to appear in which teams or whole departments only pursue their own agenda rather than connect and integrate into the whole organisation. Negative feedback dynamics kick in as people are alienated and working in a meaningless environment lacking cohesion and unity. The result is the emergence of a negative culture that cripples an organisation's ability to respond to change and prosper. In summary, one of the biggest questions facing 21st Century leaders is 'how can an organisation cope with its own complexity over time in a rapidly-changing world?'

Plot is what leaders focus on when their organisations are being successful because it enables them to maintain the organiastion as a whole. In step 1 you will learn about the crucial skill of sensemaking, a term coined in 1995 by Karl Weick and identified as the most important skill for future leaders. In step 2 you learn about the role that master stories play in uniting different groups together into a meaningful whole thereby creating an authentic workspace in which people are inspired to engage with their work. Finally, we look at culture which has been consistently identified as the single most important factor in driving long-term success (ahead of strategy, innovation of finance). You will learn what it takes to build a positive culture and drive your team on to long-term success.
