Although its name translates to "Rat's Mouth," Boca Raton is a wealthy South Florida enclave known for its luxury hotels, upscale boutiques and posh golf clubs that reflect the town's tony character. Teeing off in Boca Raton is expensive, but if you can bear the soaring temperatures from May through October, many clubs open their greens to games for free or at deep discounts. You can also find a few municipal courses with affordable greens fees.

Florida's landmark "pink hotel," the Boca Raton Resort & Club features two championship 18-hole golf courses. The par-71 Resort Course has a 69.3 course rating and a slope rating of 128. The route features undulating hills, narrow fairways and 12 water hazards. The Country Club Course has a par of 72, and a 73.0 course rating, with a slope rated 138. It is a challenging route, with several water obstacles and well-placed bunkers. The resort is also home to the Dave Pelz Scoring Game School and features a driving range and pro shop. The Boca Raton Resort offers golf vacation packages that include accommodations and unlimited golf.

Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club located in East Boca offers 7,003 yards of golf from the longest tees. The 18-hole Royal Palm is a Jack Nicklaus Signature course with a par of 72, a 71.4 course rating and a slope rated 130. Redesigned in 2002, it encompasses marshy wetlands with aquatic plants, blue lakes, water hazards and deep, strategically placed bunkers. The layout has five sets of tee boxes for golfers of all skill levels. Amenities include a driving range, pro shop and clubhouse.

Southwinds Golf Course is a municipal course with an 18-hole regulation-length course. This par-70 route features 5,633 yards of golf from its longest tee. It has a 67.7 course rating and a 120 slope rating. Open since 1977, it has a short layout, as well as three tee boxes for all skill levels. It features water hazards on 16 of its 18 holes, with one especially challenging hole that has two water obstacles -- one near the tee box and the other just before the green. Southwinds also features a driving range, full practice facilites, a bunker and a putting green.
