Description

Hi! This class is all about preparing papers for your art. I’ll show you what kind of papers to look for, we’ll draw our own patterns, and we’ll learn how to make stamps and stencils. We’ll get some really great effects by using a variety of texturing tools with paint, marbling, adding solvents to magazines and dripping isopropyl alcohol on the paint. We’ll play with a gel printing plate, too!

By the end of the class, you’ll have a stack of great papers to use in your art.

This class is all about playing and experimenting as we prepare the papers. We have freedom from composition and design here. It’s all about having some fun and making some interesting visual textures!

Thank you for joining me! LET’S DO THIS THING!!

Who this course is for:

Examples of Papers Preview 00:40

This little teaser is just a sampling of papers that have been prepared using techniques introduced in this course.

Welcome! Preview 01:23

Welcome! Thanks so much for joining me. We're going to make some amazing papers to use in your art!

In each lesson, I've included a supply list of products that I used in the lessons. Of course, you can feel free to substitute your own supplies or other brands and items as you wish. I have included info to shop for the items, but of course you can get them anywhere convenient to you.

Let's get started! :)

Collecting Papers Preview 03:29

What kind of papers should you look for? I'll tell you all about it here!

Supplies:

· No supplies needed. I explain what kind of papers you will be looking for.

Create Your Own Patterns Preview 02:35

Maybe you want a sheet full of little boxes, tiny hearts, or 8s, or Xs, etc... but you can't find it anywhere? Never fear! You can make your own patterns and duplicate them!

Supplies:

· White paper and a pen

· Optional: A variety of papers, pens, markers, charcoal, crayons, scissors, glue, paper cutter

Marbling Preview 07:01

Suminagashi is the ancient art of paper marbling. It is yet another fun way to prepare papers to use in your art! In this quick lesson, you will get a basic introduction to paper marbling. It's fun and easy, with delightful results!

Supplies: Marbling kit (Item #01309-1009 from DickBlick.com), pan of water and paper

Make a Stamp Preview 02:44

You can get the exact stamp you've been dreaming of by making it yourself! Option: When you are done making a stamp, try drawing little marks (circles, hatch marks, etc...) on the foam with a wooden skewer or a ball point pen if you want extra details on your stamps!

Supplies:

· Block of wood or stiff cardboard for base of stamp

· Foam sheet (Item # 10390075 at Michaels.com)

· Scissors

· Glue – I used Mod Podge (Item # 10228881 at Michaels.com)

Make a Stencil Preview 02:53

Don't spend all of your money on stencils at the store. Just make your own!

Supplies:

· Overhead Transparency Sheet (Item # UNV21011 at Officesupply.com)

· Scissors

· Optional: Paper Cutter, cardstock (for stencils instead of transparency sheet)

Distressing with a Solvent Preview 08:12

This one is fun! The ink is a little messy when wet, so wear an apron or paint shirt and protect your table.

Supplies:

· Recent National Geographic Magazine

· CitraSolv (Item # 01753-4905 at DickBlick.com)

· Optional: Empty refillable hairspray bottle
