This is the fifth course in THE ART & SCIENCE of DRAWING series. In this course you’ll be introduced to a series of measuring tools and strategies that will take the guesswork our of the drawing process. You'll learn how to determine the proportions of any subject and draw them accurately on the page. You’ll also learn how to use angle sighting to triangulate the location of any conceivable point on your subject.

This course is perfect for artist of any medium looking to improve their accuracy and a great primer for painting and figure drawing.

Introduction Preview 16:55

Here you’ll be introduction to proportion and learn some simple techniques to allow you to determine the proportions of any subject.

Today’s Project: Select 5 simple objects and explore their proportions using the proportional measuring techniques you learned today. For each object, draw the width to height box derived from your measuring.

Plumb Lines Preview 15:42

Today you’ll learn how to use horizontal and vertical plumb lines to get a sense of how the various parts of your subject relate to one another.

Today’s Project: Select 3 objects of moderate complexity. First, draw each of your objects on their own using plumb lines. Next, do a minimum of 2 drawings of all of your objects grouped together, each time in a different arrangement.

Angle Sighting Preview 14:18

In this lesson you’ll discover how to use your pencil to extract the distance and direction between any two points on your subject and transfer it your page.

Today’s Project: Select a simple, rectilinear subject like a book or a box. Set up your drawing station for angle sighting, and practice extracting an angle from your subject and transferring it to your drawing by first, making your first attempt at drawing the angle, next, measuring the angle from your subject and transferring it to your drawing so that you can compare the two, and finally, making any necessary changes, repeating this process until accuracy os achieved. Repeat this process until you've successfully transferred 50 angles from your subject to the page.

Triangulation Preview 15:43

Today you’ll learn how to use angle sighting to triangulate the location of any conceivable point of you subject and get it on your page.

Today’s Project: First, find a box. Using angle sighting and triangulation draw this box 3 times. for each drawing you should place the box in a different orientation.

Putting it All Together Preview 19:30

In this final lesson, you’ll learn how to incorporate various measuring techniques into your drawing process and how to design a measuring practice that’s right for you.

Today’s Project: Find three objects of moderate complexity. Measure and draw each subject using the measuring tools and strategies you’ve learned this week.
