The course of instruction offered at the Lorain County Community College (LCCC) Police Academy will qualify the student to take the required Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission (OPOTC) certification test for the position of Police Officer.

The Police Academy does not follow the traditional academic calendar.  Our Academy is now in session, and will run from May 2, 2022 until mid-October, 2022.

The next application period will begin in late September 2022 for the January 2023 Police Academy.  Request an enrollment packet.

The LCCC Police Academy training consists of approximately 845 hours of instruction, which exceeds the minimum OPOTC requirement of 740 curriculum hours.  Classes will generally be scheduled Monday through Friday from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m.  However, the Police Academy reserves the right to schedule limited evening and Saturday sessions based on needs. 

Candidates who successfully complete the Police Academy will receive 36 hours of college credit and are eligible to receive a one-year technical certificate. Financial aid, grants and scholarships may be available for those who qualify.

The in-county tuition for the Police Academy is approximately $5,500. Out-of-county tuition is approximately $6,100. The tuition includes all required ammunition, copies of the Ohio Revised Criminal and Traffic Code as well as other classroom related supplies.  In addition, a partial uniform consisting of Police Academy shirts, hats and physical conditioning uniform will be provided. Students must provide their own handgun, duty gear (holsters, handcuffs etc.), ear and eye protection, as well as uniform pants and black law enforcement style shoes or boots. 

The first step in the application process is determining your eligibility for the LCCC Police Academy. The following guidelines will assist you in determining whether you meet the eligibility requirements as dictated by the OPOTC and Academy:

An integral part of the OPOTC Police Academy curriculum is physical fitness and Subject Control (Defensive Tactics).  Cadets are required to pass Minimum Fitness Standards as determined by the OPOTC.  These include timed pushups and sit-ups, a 1.5 mile run as well as other agility related standards.  

Those trainees who fail to meet the standards by the end of the Academy training session will not be permitted to sit for the OPOTC certification exam.  

September 12 – October 28, 2022 Monday, Tuesdays, Fridays, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

This Fit for Duty program offers a comprehensive approach to prepare for the Police Academy pre-entrance physical fitness assessment based on the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission standards. The eigh-tweek session incorporates training on proper nutrition, developing core strength, muscular endurance, mindset and cardiovascular fitness.

If you feel that you meet the eligibility requirements, the second step in the application process is to request an enrollment packet, which you can receive by completing the Online Request Form. Enrollment packets for the January 2023 Academy will be available starting in late September 2022. All forms must be filled out completely and should be typed or printed. Incomplete or illegible enrollment forms will not be processed.  Prospective cadets must also attend an orientation, pass the physical fitness test, and interview with the Commander prior to entry.  Class size is limited.
